Hello Neighbor is seeking an Education and Community Engagement Manager who will lead the Study Buddy and Mentorship programs, working to connect immigrant and refugee families with volunteer supporters. About the ProgramsStudy Buddy offers subject-specific virtual tutoring to youth in grades 6-12 across Allegheny County. Students are matched with specially trained volunteer tutors for academic and social-emotional guidance. Mentorship matches immigrant and refugee families with local mentors to offer guidance, support, and friendship in the new chapter of their lives here in Pittsburgh.
The Education & Community Engagement Programs Manager will manage enrollment and support for participants in both programs, including orientations, in-home introductions and regular check-in meetings. They will collaborate with our Community Events Coordinator to coordinate training and events for participants, and work closely with a team of Study Buddy Counselors who are responsible for day-to-day program implementation.
Founded in 2017, Hello Neighbor works to improve the lives of recently resettled refugee families by matching them with dedicated neighbors to guide and support them in their new home. We’ve expanded from our mentorship program to now include refugee resettlement services, family service programs, a national program supporting other refugee and immigrant nonprofits around the country.
This is an in-house, regular, full-time, non-exempt, position at our Pittsburgh, PA office in Larimer. We are currently on a hybrid work schedule of 9am-5pm Monday through Friday; in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and work-from-home on Mondays and Fridays.
Reports To: Education & Community Empowerment Supervisor
Direct Reports: Manages Study Buddy Counselors, relevant interns
Key Responsibilities
- Manages Study Buddy and Mentorship Program strategy and participant experience.
- Leads program recruitment, carefully selecting quality matches for volunteers and youth/mentee families.
- Builds strong relationships with participants through in-home meetings, phone calls, virtual check-ins, communication, and program events.
- Visits family homes for intakes, check-in meetings, distribution of supplies, and other purposes.
- Responds appropriately to address participant concerns, offering guidance and counsel as needed.
- Updates training materials and participates in participant training.
- Ensures collection and organization of program outcomes including demographic information, attendance, and participant surveys
- Collaborates with Community Events Coordinator to create meaningful, memorable, event experiences.
- Maintains and develops partnership with program relevant partners (such as school staff, museums, libraries, service provider agencies, and others)
- Participates in regular supervision meetings and relevant staff meetings
- Adheres to Hello Neighbor’s confidentiality guidelines and ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related field (social work, sociology, anthropology, international relations, or similar) and 2-3 years of related professional experience, or at least 4-5 years of related professional experience
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work with refugee and immigrant communities
- Excellent communicator with strong written and verbal ability
- Possesses cultural humility and openness the diverse perspectives, behaviors, and needs of the communities served
- Able to cultivate excellent relationships with clients, staff, and partners
- Exhibits adept task management, including priority setting, meeting deadlines, and efficient time scheduling for multiple responsibilities
- Digital literacy and the ability to learn new software
- Flexibility and ability to work nights and weekends as necessary
- Effective collaboration with others through cooperative efforts
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
- Alignment with and support of Hello Neighbor’s core values
- Bilingual or multilingual in priority language preferred (Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Swahili, French, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Haitian-Creole, Rohingya)

Additional Details
- This is a limited term role, through July 1, 2025.
- The position is an full-time, non-exempt, in-house position at our Pittsburgh office in the Larimer neighborhood
- Clearances required: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Clearance, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal History Clearance (PA Act 23 & Act 24); Mandatory Reporter and/or PSEA training may also be required depending on job requirements
- We require a COVID-19 vaccination for full-time employees
- Valid driver’s license personal vehicle, and proof of insurance are required, Motor Vehicle Records will be required

- Compensation: $22-24 per hour, payable bi-weekly
