About the team
Works in Progress is a magazine of scientific, technological and economic progress with team members in the United States and the United Kingdom. We are a part of Stripe.
What you’ll do
Responsibilities
- Be our lead editor covering housing, architecture, and beauty in other spheres of life. This includes four main strands:
- Researching and writing articles;
- Editing articles to ensure they meet our standards of readability, strong arguments, and interesting storytelling;
- Commissioning articles from other writers, ensuring a healthy pipeline of pieces in your topic area;
- Contributing to other Works in Progress work where relevant e.g. events, newsletter, social media, video content, podcasts.
- Maintain and strengthen your reputation as a writer and thinker, e.g. by attending and speaking at events, building your network, and writing on your personal account and other channels where relevant.
Who you are
We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
- Has experience in full-time editing for a publication with multiple contributors (a magazine, a newsletter, or similar), or some other demonstrable track record as an editor of articles or books similar to Works in Progress.
- Is familiar with Works in Progress’s existing work and some of its subject areas.
Preferred qualifications
- Is a very good editor of long-form non-fiction writing.
- Is organised and reliable.
- Writes clearly and simply.
- Is very good at expressing complex ideas clearly and simply.
