The Sustaining Engineering organization is responsible for optimizing the in-service product line at Fluence. Fluence is seeking an engaging, technically minded leader for a team of highly capable Systems Engineers within Sustaining Engineering. The engineers on this team lead the investigation and resolution of the most challenging problems for our in-service products. The successful candidate will be an experienced team builder and coach who has the technical capacity to solve difficult electrical and control problems that affect a battery energy storage system. The successful candidate will also have a solid grasp of management best practices required to achieve success working with cross-functional teams in a global organization.
What does a Director, Sustaining Systems Engineering do at Fluence?
- Develop a holistic view of the product and own a multi-disciplinary approach to optimize product performance.
- Recruit and develop high-caliber Systems Engineers and Electrical Engineers that are capable of solving challenging technical problems.
- Train Systems Engineers to fully own an issue in collaboration with stakeholders and other engineers. These engineers will typically lead a small team and success will require disciplined root cause analysis/8D problem solving, cross-functional teamwork and collaboration, and effective written and verbal communication.
- Personally lead the 8D problem solving process for some of the most challenging technical problems. Provide appropriate oversight as Systems Engineers are assigned ownership for 8D problem solving.
- Oversee critical initiatives to improve the product line. This includes coaching teams to success, developing a clear picture of team performance, challenging a team to achieve ambitious goals with speed, and intervening as necessary to achieve desired results.
- Provide written and verbal reports to senior leaders at Fluence, and ensure continuous development of strategic objectives based on conversations with senior leaders and a growing understanding of the business environment.
- Manage the budget for the Sustaining Engineering program.
- Build a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement. Foster an environment where engineers are excited about their careers through professional development, coaching, mentorship, facilitating peer support, and utilizing external educational resources.
What does the ideal candidate look like?
- Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering or Electrical Engineering, with at least 15 years' experience in battery energy storage, the electric power industry, or similar experience with complex industrial electrical systems.
- Technical experience: You have a solid understanding the electrical, control, and systems principles of a grid-scale battery energy storage system. Alternatively, you have significant technical experience and understanding of power electrical systems such that you are able to quickly develop an expertise in energy storage.
- Talent and People Leadership: You have experience building and managing high-performing engineering teams in a fast-paced agile environment across multiple domains. You are a proven people leader and coach, and you excel at developing talent and advancing careers.
- High-level execution: You have structured an engineering organization and have planned out how teams need to grow and evolve. You are able to cultivate collaborative cross-functional relationships to drive a team to success. You are a natural problem solver, always looking to optimize productivity and not afraid to change course when necessary.
