The Director, Organizational Learning and Development will be responsible for the design and implementation of SunSource’s talent development strategy, programs, and processes in support of the business strategy. This includes areas such as career development, all levels of training and learning, and talent management. This position is highly visible, reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer, and serves as an internal advisor on leadership and executive development, succession planning, and long-term talent planning.

Essential Functions

  • Lead talent development strategies and programs: Lead and deliver the talent development strategy in order to increase our internal talent pipeline. This includes the design and implementation of our training strategy in support of organizational skill and competency gaps.
  • Research and Leverage Available Resources: Review and evaluate available training programs and resources offered by current partners, vendors, suppliers, or outside agencies, in addition to the products/systems we have on-hand. Establish library of available courses, training aids and calendar of training sessions available.
  • Develop and Enhance Associate Curriculum: Review and evaluate existing training curriculum design and update to reflect needs identified in training needs assessment. Develop role specific curriculum for positions without existing plans.
  • Drive Associate Engagement Programs: Work with senior leaders and HR to design and implement engagement / retention strategies, including associate surveys, recognition programs and communication of our employment value proposition.
  • Facilitate Training Sessions: Leverage external, existing materials, as well as bring new programs to the organization. Facilitate leadership and associate development programs, as well as create processes for others to conduct training (e.g., train the trainer sessions, coaching managers, leverage external resources, etc.).
  • Develop and Manage a Learning Communication Strategy: Ensure that the entire organization stays up to date on learning and development opportunities, events, and resources.

Experience, Education and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in HR Management, Learning & Development, Business Administration, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or related field required.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience within Learning and Development and/or Organization Development is required.
  • 3+ years supervisory / management experience of a team focused on training, organizational development, or related disciplines is required. 
  • Experience with the development of complex training curriculum and leadership development coursework is required.
  • Prior experience managing an enterprise-wide LMS system (such as SkillSoft/Percipio, LinkedIn Learning, etc.) is required.
  • Experience working in a technical based, geographically distributed organization is preferred.
  • Experience with sales skills training, partnerships with sales enablement teams, and technical / technician training is highly preferred.
  • Previous training experience within the industrial distribution or manufacturing industry is preferred.  
  • Familiarity with e-learning authoring software such as Articulate or Captivate is preferred.
  • Prior experience using video editing software such as Camtasia or something similar is preferred.
  • Previous experience as an HR Generalist / HR Business Partner is preferred.

  • Exceptional critical thinking skills to evaluate alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to complex problems
  • Solid leadership skills, including the willingness and ability to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction
  • Possesses high sense of urgency
  • Ability to influence, motivate, and engage senior leaders to make the changes needed to progress within the organization

Location / Travel Requirements

  • This position is based out of the Corporate HQ office in Addison, IL as the preferred work location.  
  • Ability to travel up to 20% or more
