Osmo is hiring a

Director of Sensory Science

New York, United States

Who we are at Osmo:

Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Vision and hearing have been digitized, but not scent. It’s time we solve this. We’re bringing an unprecedented combination of software, data, hardware and capital to the historic challenge of giving computers a sense of smell.

We believe in the power of automation and carefully applied AI/ML to solve problems that are beyond what the unaided human mind can tackle on its own. In the first phase of our development, we are using our map of odor along with cutting-edge generative AI to create the next generation of aroma molecules (e.g., the ingredients in the fragrances we wear and the products we use). We're a hybrid company with a laboratory and center-of-mass in Somerville, MA and New York, NY.

Osmo is on the lookout for a Director of Sensory Science to lead our sensory science team who is responsible for conducting olfactory data gathering, designing experiments, and managing research involving human participants. The role involves close collaboration with teams in Software, Data Operations, Chemistry, and Machine Learning to tackle the exciting challenge of equipping computers with the ability to detect scents. We seek a driven candidate who has a keen interest in olfaction, is dedicated to meticulous data collection and conducting experiments efficiently, and possesses the skill to distill complex data into practical insights.

You will:

  • Lead the sensory science team, guiding the strategy on how Osmo can enhance data collection and collaborate with the Machine Learning (ML) team to train models using the data.
  • Design, prepare, and execute innovative experiments to explore fundamental research questions in human psychophysics.
  • Develop new methods for data collection, instrumentation, and experimental design to support research objectives.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure experimental designs and data collection align with company goals.
  • Define and oversee both internal and external Sensory Science research and development initiatives.
  • Build a kind, driven, curious, and resourceful Sensory Science team at Osmo.
  • Play a crucial role in our ambitious projects at the intersection of Machine Learning and Sensory Science.

You have:

  • An advanced degree in science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • A strong background in conducting research with human subjects and a thorough understanding of research ethics.
  • Expertise in sensory science.
  • Proficiency in Python and Jupyter notebooks.
  • A solid grasp of statistical principles and experimental design.
  • The ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple projects concurrently. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the aptitude to convey findings to stakeholders effectively and succinctly.
  • A curious nature, eager to collaborate across disciplines with research scientists on pioneering projects and to explore new scents!
  • Leadership experience in a research or product development context.
  • Previous experience working closely with Machine Learning teams.

Expected Salary: $215,000 - $260,000/year
