While we continue to operate as a remote-first organization, as a means to build community and enhance the opportunity for in-person engagements, preference is for employees located within the Denver Tech Region (Denver/Boulder/Colorado Springs). This role will be hybrid – the employee will come to an Arturo office or co-working location a couple of days a week; the rest of the week the employee will work from home.  
 
Position Overview:
 
We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Director of AI. You will be joining a growing team of Data Scientists and Engineers working to develop a one-of-a-kind resource based on machine learning. The Director of AI is responsible for the day-to-day technology execution for all products and will lead product delivery and execution, helping individual contributors and leads focus on delivering ML/DL models to our product line. This role includes interfacing with the leadership team on long-term strategy, helping engineers across the organization solve problems, and executing solutions, including code reviews. This role oversees our ML software engineers, ML model developers, and our Data Quality team. The Director of AI will report to the Senior VP of Engineering and work hand in hand with the Product, Platform, and Application teams to ensure product execution and vision are aligned and delivered. 
 
The ideal candidate for this role should possess a high work ethic, excellent communication skills, and exceptional technical skills. This role will require a balance between short, medium, and long-term thinking/planning.  The ideal candidate may not always know the answer, but instead, be a person who is able to guide the right technical and product discussions to help the entire team make data-driven decisions

What you’ll do:

  • Set the intellectual property vision of the company by being the thought leader on forward looking, competitive features such as predictive analytics, multi-source imagery, and integration of social media data
  • Develop, test, refine, and deploy models to production as needed
  • Work with the Machine Learning & Data Quality team leads in weekly planning and execution
  • Work with the engineering team and leadership teams to build roadmaps and lead prioritization; balance the right amount of structure and planning for a fast-paced, execution-focused engineering team; take part in code reviews
  • Build, manage, and mentor a team of highly skilled ML engineers
  • Work with the Data Quality team to optimize the labeling, training, and evaluation pipeline
  • Provide senior leadership with regular updates on health, development, and  delivery timelines

What you bring:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related STEM discipline
  • 7+ years experience as a hands-on data scientist or machine learning engineer in Computer Vision
  • 5+ years working with ML modeling frameworks (PyTorch) and system design, deep learning architectures and optimization approaches, and cloud ML Infrastructures (AWS)
  • 3+ years experience leading geographically dispersed teams of machine learning engineers
  • 3+ years experience with geospatial data
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail
  • A genuine interest in the growth and success of others, an awesome attitude, a compassionate approach to communication, a high EQ score, and the ability to laugh at yourself
  • Ability to follow agile ceremonies
  • Seamless ability to collaborate closely with product and engineers to ensure customer requirements are met and on-time 

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing
  • Experience with big data scaling, storage, and unified access
  • Insurance domain expertise

Compensation and Benefits:
For residents of Colorado: Salary Minimum: $160,000 Salary Maximum: $200,000 The base salary range above represents Arturo’s current estimate of the low and high end of the salary range for this position in Colorado. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including, without limitation, location, experience and performance. Other compensation may include discretionary bonuses and stock options. In addition, Arturo provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health (medical, dental and vision) insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays, flexible time off (FTO) and paid parental leave.
