DE DEPARTMENT

The Design, Engineering & Construction (DEC) team is responsible for the entire process flow of delivering data centers from conception through commissioning, working with Sales, Operations and management along the way.  DEC also works closely with partner contractors to come up with a vertically integrated design and manages these partners to success through technical feedback and review, and actively participating in review of schedule and budget.  Many times, a role like this at other companies is purely oversight.  One thing that distinguishes Vantage is that our technical staff is given the responsibility and authority to directly drive the process.  When compared to external resources, our internal team can align long-term operational sustainability with value engineering and cost metrics to deliver products aligned with corporate goals.  This approach empowers each member of the team to drive high- impact decisions and even more impactful results.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

Vantage is looking for a Design Manager to provide overall management for our development of data center space for current and future projects.  This position will oversee new product development, new industry design trends, innovations, changes in code requirements and all aspects of design & Engineering.  As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing multiple projects related and product development tasks with competing priorities ensuring all projects are in alignment with strategic corporate objectives.  Collaboration and integration in the sales lifecycle process including client interface is integral to the role.  Constant communication with facilities operation, sales and marketing department and other subject matter experts will ensure that the design of new facilities will maintain and enhance Vantage’s product and service offering. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manage all aspects of design and engineering including site assessment, conceptual design, basis of design, scope of work, development of construction documents.
  • Develop and enhance design standards to conform with company vision and industry best practices
  • Provide thought and project leadership, while being accountable for team results on all engineering projects and assignments, including performance, budget, schedule and coordination with internal and external project stakeholders
  • Evaluate new technology and design techniques to add enterprise value and enhanced performance
  • Stay involved in data center engineering community to gain valuable knowledge of new trends and industry standards

 

DUTIES

  • Manage engineering activities and provide engineering support from concept through commissioning across Vantage’s portfolio of construction projects
  • Drive design and engineering decisions to conclusion including managing internal and external resources, project teams, contractors and vendors
  • QA/QC work products of direct reports and confirm accuracy. Manage inputs and delivery of work products from internal team members to ensure that new data center spaces comply with all applicable requirements (BOD, specifications, code, lease, etc.)
  • Ensure lessons learned are held and placed in the feedback loop to drive continuous improvement
  • Report status of all projects (risks, schedule, quality and budget) to management
  • Develop, refine, and implement processes and policies for new product research, comparison and ultimately green lighting deployment and actualization into product offering
  • Understand business strategies to align product development and innovation to drive success
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and opportunities to innovate using concepts from within and outside of the data center industry
  • Consultant/Vendor/Contractor qualification, network management/expansion, new technology evaluation for use on current product line and future product development opportunities
  • Prepare reports and presentations to drive action from engineering and product development analysis
  • Support project control team and other functional teams to establish project budgets, analyze design impacts on build costs and submit approval packages to executive team
  • Coordinate with site operations to define project requirements and design criteria and provide support for any issues that arise once critical infrastructure is in operation
  • Work with sales and marketing to provide technical support wherever needed

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline from an accredited university or college
  • 10+ years of experience in a management role required, 15 to 20 years preferred
  • Data Center experience is required
  • Experience in CSA (civil, structural, architectural) and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) design, engineering and construction is a requirement
  • Familiar with engineering analysis tools such as ETAP, 6Sigma CFD software, AmpCalc, etc.
  • Travel required is expected to be 10 to 15% but may increase over time as the business evolves
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively work with present information to executive management, operations, sales engineering and finance
