What’s the mission?

This is an exciting opportunity for a people leader with extensive technical or civil engineering experience to play an active part in developing the function and supporting the business in achieving goals! Regular travel will require you to attend office/site visits across the UK.

You will oversee a high-performing team of approximately 14 members, providing clear performance expectations, mentorship, and development opportunities to nurture talent and promote an inclusive work environment. By fostering teamwork and knowledge sharing, you will ensure a cohesive and dynamic team culture.

In this role, you will drive operational excellence by managing the day-to-day activities of the design and engineering function, ensuring efficient project delivery through robust project management processes. You will oversee resource allocation, meet deadlines, and manage departmental budgets to achieve financial sustainability while identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Your technical leadership will be instrumental, requiring an in-depth understanding of civil engineering and drainage industry trends, regulations, and best practices. You will provide expert guidance to your team, take an active role in professional associations, and oversee the resolution of technical complaints to ensure quality and compliance.

Building and maintaining strong client relationships is a cornerstone of this position. You will actively understand client needs, deliver innovative solutions, and lead dispute resolution processes to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction. Additionally, you will collaborate with sales and marketing teams to identify business opportunities, develop proposals, and represent the company at industry events, driving business development and innovation in line with market demands.

Finally, you will be a key figure in stakeholder management, cultivating relationships with senior management, internal departments, industry partners, and trade bodies. You will effectively communicate the goals and achievements of the design and engineering team while representing the company in legislative and trade discussions.

What are the mission-critical skills?

  • A technical / civil engineering background (likely to be from a consultant engineering, contractor, or construction product manufacturer background).
  • An engineering qualification to degree level, preferably chartered
  • Experience managing a team and working at a senior level and change management
  • Use of design software packages such as AUTOCAD, Revit, or 3D Civils.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem solver with a professional, ‘can do’ attitude
  • Previous experience within the drainage, water management, or SuDS sectors is desirable
