Communications Design tells OpenAI’s story—what we’re doing and why it matters—to the world through a variety of surfaces, most notably openai.com. Our small but nimble and growing team supports the design and development needs across the entire company, and sits within a larger team of professionals in press relations, public policy, and employee communications.

Communicating the advances and benefits of AGI is some of the most important work at OpenAI, and our goal is to do it in a beautiful, accessible, scalable, systematic way, with transparency and authenticity.

About the Role

As a Design Engineer at OpenAI, you'll be pivotal in crafting high-impact, delightful, and polished user high-visibility experiences, working closely with a dynamic team of designers and full-stack engineers. You'll leverage your expertise in design, engineering, and motion to bring innovative ideas from inception to execution swiftly and independently.


This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Rapidly prototype new user experiences.

  • Iterate quickly to turn ideas into testable concepts.

  • Enhance our design system and establish motion guidelines for consistency and delight.

  • Work closely with designers and engineers, prioritizing beauty and usability.

  • Craft solutions focused on the end-user's needs and experiences.

  • Find innovative ways to integrate design and engineering.


You might thrive in this role if you:

  • 8+ years in design engineering with a strong portfolio.

  • Are experienced in design (layout, typography, color, Figma).

  • Are experienced with front-end engineering (Next.js, CSS / Tailwind, Vercel).

  • Are experienced with motion & storytelling (easing curves, animation duration).

  • Can independently lead projects from concept to launch.

  • Are committed to creating beautiful, user-centric designs prioritizing usability and  accessibility.

  • Have a relentless drive for perfection.

  • Enjoy collaborating in a team-focused environment with marketing & design.
