The role
The FT deputy night news editor is an exciting and highly responsible role at the heart of the London-based newsroom.
This opportunity has three main facets. First, running the FT UK homepage and app, and making important calls on which stories and analysis to run prominently.
Second, commissioning and editing breaking news that straddles the FT’s key news desks: World, UK, Companies, and Markets. This in practice means overseeing a rich and varied list of stories ranging from the Middle East conflict, to the UK Budget, to BHP’s takeover bid for Anglo-American.
Third, revising stories for publication. The role also involves careful liaison with the FT’s New York news desk, notably on stories being published during the UK evening.
The successful applicant will run the London-based night news team when Andrew Parker is away.
You will be someone with the confidence to know what is an FT story, the ability to collaborate effectively with reporters and other editors, and have strong editing and production skills. And all of this work often needs to be done at speed, while maintaining high standards of accuracy.
The role involves four night shifts a week, and regular Sunday working.
