About the role
As Deputy Editor you'll organise and make decisions on the direction of content, working across our ever-changing portfolio of magazines (and potential digital content). You’ll primarily be working on the official Pokémon magazine and MEGA, while keeping an eye on Minecraft and some LEGO titles.
You'll be making editorial decisions alongside the editor and autonomously in the editor’s absence. Helping to implement the editorial focus, content and material of the magazines while managing staff and liaising with other departments internally and externally. You will help promote the development and profitability of the magazines within the marketplace. Along with the editor, you will be responsible for ensuring that the editorial vision of the magazines and covermounts are maintained.
Deputy Editor experience is an advantage, but this position is a great opportunity for someone freshly stepping up to this level.
As a Deputy Editor you will;
- Stay on top of Pokémon brand developments
- Work closely with senior members of the editorial team including the editor, art and production to help meet all deadlines
- Where/when relevant, help manage members of staff and freelancers - ensuring that writers are able to produce exciting, creative content for readers within a busy, deadline-focused environment
- Take responsibility for originating and generating new ideas for each magazine/brand. Ensure they have a current, relevant feel and you always deliver high quality editorial while staying true to the brand where appropriate
- Make sure that all content is on-brand, to deadline and complies with the brand’s guidelines. Keep on top of trends and what’s popular with 7-11 year-olds
- Set-up editorial meetings to plan and discuss content. Flatplan issues in conjunction with the editor
- Manage and motivate staff alongside the editor, and in the absence of the editor, taking responsibility for performance appraisals and setting objectives as appropriate
- Develop positive working relationships with brand and rights holders to ensure that the flow of information and the approvals process for the magazines are secure
- Keep abreast of market developments and digital opportunities, coming up with new ideas to keep ahead of competitors
- Maintain specialist knowledge, potentially keeping in regular contact with rights owners
- With the editor, liaise closely with the advertising manager to plan advertising space allocation in each title, ensuring the advertisements adhere to the advertising guidelines
- Attend meetings with the publisher when needed
- Manage enquiries and complaints
- Attend internal and external meetings, promotions and exhibitions, which may on occasions fall outside of normal working hours
- Represent the magazine/brand when appropriate, potentially giving press interviews
- Pitch new product ideas to the Group Editor
- Work on new/different magazines as the company secures rights to new titles
- Become familiar with the production process from start to finish

- An in-depth knowledge of (and passion for!) the Pokémon brand and gaming
- Evidence of first-class writing skills, for both print and digital content. Clear and accurate communication skills, both written and verbal
- Organisation and time-management skills. Ability to prioritise work according to tight deadlines
- Experience on a children’s magazine/brand is preferable
- Ability to foster a positive working environment, taking all stakeholders into account, create new contacts and find relevant sources to help with features/projects

- Knowledge of the children’s media market in all its forms: film, TV, gaming, apps
- Knowledge of media law is preferable. Understanding of picture copyright issues would be an advantage
