HRL is seeking a highly motivated technical and personnel manager with excellent communication and leadership skills to serve as the Department Manager of Computational Physics. In this position, the candidate will be the primary manager for the department containing multiple groups in areas including quantum theory and simulation, quantum optoelectronics, quantum software, and device modeling. The role includes technical strategy development (managing resources and personnel to achieve key technical strategy objectives), significant intercommunication between executives and scientists, and leadership activities to facilitate research efficacy, efficiency, and growth.
Essential Duties:
The candidate will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic vision for the department to support existing programs and future opportunities. Management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting), performance management through informal coaching and formal feedback. The candidate will organize and support and/or lead customer development and technical marketing of the department’s capabilities and technologies. In addition, the department manager will work closely with the Vice President for the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory along with key technical leaders within the department on a wide range of tactical and strategic development efforts.
Technical and managerial duties require candidate to present details of work to colleagues during design/code reviews, create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports). Managerial duties also include maintaining compliance with organizational imperative (for example, procedures related to IP generation and protection).
Required Skills:
At least 5 years of experience in a role involving leadership of highly trained technical staff preferably in a research and development environment.
Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and management. Experience with line management functions, such as hiring planning, drafting of job descriptions, recruiting staff, and providing critical feedback to staff and business organizations.
More than 10 years of experience in relevant technical area, preferably in a research and development environment.
Desired Skills:
The optimal candidate would contribute to technical research aligned with the knowledge and capabilities of the department in one or more of the following areas: high-performance computing, quantum information theory, semiconductor and superconductor device modeling, or optics; however candidates with adjacent technical skillsets and a strong record of technical management experience are also of interest.
Education Desired:
MS or PhD in physics, applied physics, computer science, or related scientific field.
Physical Requirements:
Proficiency in use of computers and high-performance computing, programming technical simulation software, software development, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently.
Special Requirements:
US Citizenship required.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $177,400 - $221,800 + bonus + benefits.
