About the Role:

As a Data Scientist, you will collaborate closely with our Product, Business, Data, and Engineering teams to develop impactful data-driven solutions. Your work will help personalize the member experience, enhance our recommendation engine and drive key business decisions at Borrowell.

During your first year, you can expect to:

• Develop Business & Data Understanding – Learn Borrowell’s key metrics, member behaviors, and product ecosystem. Translate business needs into data problems.
• Analyze & Prepare Data – Conduct exploratory data analysis, ensure data quality, and build useful features for modeling.
• Build & Evaluate Models – Train and validate ML models and support key business decisions.
• Drive Business Impact – Present actionable insights, collaborate with stakeholders and contribute to data-driven decision-making.
• Take Initiative & Innovate – Work independently in a fast-paced environment, experiment with new ideas, and continuously enhance your skills.

Requirements

• 1+ years of experience building Data Science solutions from ideation to implementation.
• Proficiency in Python and related libraries for exploratory data analysis and modeling.
• Strong SQL skills – ability to write complex queries to extract, clean, and integrate data from multiple sources.
• Strong problem-solving skills and data intuition – ability to translate business challenges into data-driven solutions.
• Experience with supervised learning and handling class imbalances.
• Experience with A/B testing and experimentation frameworks.
• Effective communication skills – ability to present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Self-starter with a growth mindset – comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with ambiguity.
• Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git)

Nice to Haves:

• Experience with recommendation systems, clustering, dimensionality reduction and NLP.
• Proficiency in DBT for data transformations and PySpark, SparkSQL, or other distributed computing frameworks for large-scale data processing.
• Experience with end-to-end ML workflows from ideation to productionalization.
• Experience with Looker or other BI tools for data visualization and reporting.
• Familiarity with Snowflake, Azure Databricks, or other cloud-based data platforms.
• Familiarity with MLOps tools (e.g., MLflow, Feature Stores).

We are remote-first across Canada with an office in Toronto. This role requires you to attend in-person meetings and team-building events.
