The Cultural Integration Caseworker supports vulnerable refugees to create stability, developing self-sufficiency plans through a realistic and strengths-based approach, and actively providing appropriate enrollments, services, and referrals based on client need, strengths, and goals.  This position is responsible for leading and teaching extended cultural orientation classes, providing translation/interpretation, offering individualized client support, and maintaining accurate and complete case files.  The Cultural Integration Caseworker serves as a cultural liaison to ensure services are culturally and linguistically accessible and aid client integration.  This role is part of a larger team and works closely with other staff members to achieve overall program and client goals.  

Role & Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with program guidelines and requirements for the Preferred Communities and other grant and funding sources
  • Operate as a cultural liaison between clients and staff, service providers, and volunteers to ensure services are culturally and linguistically accessible to clients
  • Lead out in client recruitment, eligibility screening, and enrollment
  • Work with clients to identify strengths and barriers to successful integration, then establish self-sufficiency goals and a comprehensive plan for goal completion
  • Conduct regular meetings with clients to ensure progress toward goals 
  • Communicate client progress, needs, and feedback to teammates and refer clients as necessary to supportive services within or outside WR
  • Collaborate with teammates to create weekly lessons for Extended Cultural Orientation (ECO) classes that are culturally relevant, assist clients in reaching their self-sufficiency goals, and meet grant requirements
  • Lead ECO classes, creating an encouraging and supportive environment that fosters learning and encourages clients to work towards self-sufficiency
  • Educate clients on topics he/she is knowledgeable about in a culturally relevant and engaging manner, using and/or creating materials appropriate to the culture and literacy levels of clients
  • Provide interpretation and translation for clients, staff, presenters, service providers, and volunteers
  • Keep accurate client records including enrollment and case notes in Dynamics and tracking client attendance and participation
  • Administer assessment tools to monitor clients’ progress toward goals
  • Manage client case files, ensuring they are current and accurate with all necessary documentation to demonstrate clients’ progress towards self-sufficiency
  • Achieve grant requirements and deliverables through timely, high-quality services
  • Assist in drafting reports (narrative, data, financial) to grantors, donors, and volunteers
  • Work with Education team to develop and implement new programs and curricula that meet unique client population needs 
  • Participate in on-going training to improve service delivery and ensure compliance
  • Participate in required department, office, and national meetings and trainings, including travel to Preferred Communities national conference
  • Collaborate in onboarding and training new caseworkers
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively with a team in a multi-cultural environment
  • Demonstrated cultural competency of Afghan and American culture, including common cultural barriers and ways to facilitate integration
  • Experience working with preliterate Afghan women highly desired   
  • Ability to provide quick and accurate interpretation and translation 
  • Proven experience teaching or leading groups 
  • Experience developing curriculum, lessons, and/or training materials highly desired 
  • Familiarity with Sacramento area social service providers highly desired
  • Highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently towards case, department, and office goals
  • Excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to handle multiple projects at once, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively
  • Ability to speak comfortably on the phone and in person with clients and partners
  • Responsive and readily available to clients, staff, volunteers, and community partners, interacting in a professional manner with a customer-service mindset 
  • Dependable and consistent in attendance and performance, while flexible and adaptable to needs of clients and changing program realities

Requirements

  • Mature and personal Christian faith

  • Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities
  • Able to affirm and/or acknowledge World Reliefs Core Beliefs, Statement of Faith, Christian Identity and National Evangelicals For the Health of The Nation document
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or related field of study; or equivalent work experience
  • Strong communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English
  • Cross-cultural experience; 1+ years of experience working with Afghan or other refugee populations 2+ years of work experience with non-profit and/or community-based organizations
  • Must be fluent in Dari and Pashto, both orally and in writing; interpretation skills assessment required
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office applications, experience with online record keeping and data entry, and familiarity with digital communication tools such as Zoom and Teams
  • Valid drivers license, access to reliable vehicle and clean driving record
