Reporting to the General Counsel, the Corporate Counsel, Projects & Commercial will work closely with members of Teck’s project development group and commercial teams, as well as other members of the legal group to provide timely and useful legal advice and services in support of Teck’s business, including its expanding project portfolio. The successful candidate will work with Teck teams in Canada as well at its foreign projects and operations.

The preferred candidate will have a background in commercial matters focused on construction and infrastructure management, project development, supply chain management, and dispute resolution in addition to general corporate/commercial experience, preferably with exposure to the natural resources industry. Strong technical and drafting skills, as well as commercial acumen are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures. 
  • Serve as the primary legal partner for the project development and commercial teams developing collaborative business relationships that drive value and mitigate risk. 
  • Overseeing or managing claims or related dispute processes
  • Provide transactional and policy-based legal advice and services to the company’s business units on other commercial matters
  • Lead and develop one legal advisor supporting projects and commercial activities by organizing work and providing opportunities for assignments that leverages skills, promotes learning and grows capabilities
  • Develop and improve business processes and procedures 
  • Perform general corporate counsel work at the corporate level
  • Manage outside counsel on a variety of matters

Provide advice and guidance for all aspects of engineering, consulting, construction and project contracting including: 

  • Advising on tender and procurement documents
  • Drafting and negotiating engineering and other professional services and construction contracts
  • Supply chain (including logistics) matters

Qualifications:

  • Minimum six years of legal experience primarily in construction and infrastructure management and project development arrangements, with exposure to related dispute resolution.  Supply chain experience a strong positive.
  • Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) required
  • Member or eligible to become a member of the BC Bar required
  • Strong drafting skills and commercial acumen is required
  • Independent, self-starter with strong organizational, prioritization and time-management skills required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide range of customers as part of a multidisciplinary and multijurisdictional team is required
  • Experience working on mining or other natural resources matters is strongly preferred

Salary Range: $144,000 – $194,000
