Position Summary
The Safety Coordinator plays a pivotal role in supporting, promoting, and maintaining a safe work environment for all employees working at the Coordinator’s designated region of facilities in Indiana or Michigan. Reporting to the Safety Manager, you will be immersed in the safety details for each assigned facility and will perform many administrative tasks related to corporate safety compliance, documentation, and training. You will work closely with management and employees to minimize workplace accidents, injuries, and incidents, which will foster a culture of “safety first” throughout the organization.
Position Duties/Responsibilities
- Regularly visit designated facilities to provide increased safety awareness and culture
- Serve as a primary resource for employees regarding safety-related questions, concerns, and issues, escalating complex matters to the Safety Manager as needed
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work practices to identify and prevent potential hazards and develop safety metrics
- Collaborate with branch managers and employees to identify safety concerns and assist Safety Manager to develop strategies for improvement
- Assist in investigating workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Prepare reports and presentations on safety performance, initiatives, and compliance for management review
- Compile and submit accident reports required by regulatory agencies, insurance companies, etc.
- Collect and maintain data to ensure accurate records of safety-related incidents, training activities, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Provide administrative support to safety committees and meetings, including scheduling, agenda preparation, and documentation
- Participate in safety committees and meetings to discuss safety performance, initiatives, and goals, providing input and recommendations for improvement
- Promote a culture of safety by fostering awareness, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the organization
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- No formal responsibility for supervising others
Position Requirements
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1 year of experience in a safety-related role, preferably in a construction or industrial setting
- Basic knowledge of applicable safety regulations and standards, such as OSHA, EPA, and DOT
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organization
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also functioning effectively as part of a team
- Commitment to promoting a culture of safety and fostering a positive work environment
- Ability and willingness to travel (50-75%) with regular day trips and occasional overnight stays
Preferred:
- Associate's degree or certification in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Experience in conducting safety inspections, audits, and incident investigations
- Experience in delivering safety training sessions to employees, including developing training materials and presentations
- Certification(s) in occupational health and safety (e.g., OSHA 10/30-hour, First Aid/CPR)
- Knowledge of industry-specific safety requirements and best practices in the construction or industrial sectors
- Participation in relevant professional development activities, such as conferences, seminars, or workshops
- Background in union environment

- Ability to collect data, establish and analyze facts to draw valid conclusions without bias. Provide and implement solutions to various levels of leadership
- Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written and listening skills
- Ability to respond to and handle confidential business and personal information/documents
Other Requirements of Position
- Works under limited supervision. Independently determines the approach to take and the methods to use. Interprets policy in terms of objectives. Informs manager of unusual situations with far reaching implications.
- Major responsibilities typically require creativity and latitude. Employee typically operates with specific objectives but often few written or unwritten procedures as guidelines. Some policies or precedents for action exist.
- If an error is made while in this position, it will require some effort to identify the error and can moderately impact the company financially
