Contract: Engineering Team Lead (Java)

This is an engagement through Upwork’s Hybrid Workforce Solutions (HWS) Team. Our Hybrid Workforce Solutions Team is a global group of professionals that support Upwork’s business. Our HWS team members are located all over the world.

Upwork is seeking an experienced Engineering Lead to drive the success of one of our platform's products. In this role, you will guide a team of talented software engineers, collaborate closely with Product Managers and Designers, and deliver high-quality solutions that delight our customers. This is a contract position with the potential for renewal based on project needs and accomplishments.

Work/Project Scope:

• Collaborate with Engineering, Data Science, Product Management, and Design teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Provide leadership and guidance to a team of software engineers with a focus on quality and customer-centricity.
• Partner with Product Management and Design to plan, drive execution, and ensure timely delivery of projects with a high standard of quality.
• Translate the broader vision, features, and challenges into actionable plans, making trade-offs where necessary to achieve goals.
• Design, build, and ship delightful customer experiences by working closely with cross-functional teams.
• Participate in regular project updates, ensuring strong communication and supporting engineers in completing their tasks.
• Independently manage your time to achieve project deliverables, which may require an estimated 40 hours per week.
• Collaborate with the team during core hours (8:00 am to 11:00 pm Pacific Time), with occasional availability until 12:00 pm Pacific Time for urgent matters.

Must Haves (Required Skills):

• At least 3 years of experience leading the development of Back-end applications.
• Proven technical leadership in building complex projects from ideation to launch.
• Ability to define the roadmap and goals in partnership with the product team and maintain team alignment with business objectives.
• Strong project management skills and experience partnering with cross-functional teams to launch products successfully.
• Excellent people management and interpersonal skills, with experience in collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
• Proficiency in English with frequent and effective communication skills.
• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, and describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and lead teams through change.
• Proven experience in software development.
• Experience leading remote and distributed teams.
