Position Summary 

In consultation with the operations Co-Director, the Co-Director of the School of Hebrew determines and supervises the instructional and co-curricular summer programs, including lectures, films, concerts, field trips, etc.; they hire the School’s faculty and summer staff, work with instructors on developing and implementing curriculum, administer the School budget, supervise student progress, provide advice and support to students, faculty colleagues, and staff, and represent the School at professional meetings. They also have curricular oversight for the MA and DML programs. 


Responsibilities 

The Co-Director spends the summer in residence on the Vermont campus where they oversee the instructional and co-curricular program and teach one organized course, if time allows.

Summer Responsibilities:

  • Prepare instructors for the program in the following areas: creation of syllabi, curriculum development, student support, and expectations as School of Hebrew faculty members
  • Supervise all faculty throughout the summer to ensure that all course goals are met and student learning goals are achieved
  • Observe classes in all programs and provide timely feedback to instructors
  • Plan and develop summer guest lectures and co-curricular activities
  • Daily availability to program faculty, staff and students to provide necessary support and assistance
  • Handle any confidential issues that arise during the summer program with professionalism and care

Academic Year Responsibilities in Collaboration with the Co-Director:

  • Evaluate and assess SoH programs to ensure that the mission is being carried out and look for areas of future growth and development
  • Summer and academic year hiring for faculty and staff for all programs
  • Manage, supervise, and evaluate School of Hebrew academic year faculty and staff
  • Oversee the SoH placement and exit exams and processes
  • Graduate and language program curricular development
  • Instructor communication
  • Teacher training initiatives 
  • Staff meetings
  • Student recruitment for all programs
  • Fundraising
  • Budget administration

Initial appointment is for three years. Directors submit an Annual Report in the fall of each year summarizing School performance for the summer, goals for the next year, and vision for the School.

The criteria for evaluation are:

  • promotion of curricular development
  • recruitment of students
  • effective representation of Middlebury College
  • student satisfaction
  • contribution to achieving the goals of the Language Schools

Requirements and Qualifications 

Education: He/she should hold a doctoral degree in one of the following fields - Hebrew language and culture, second language acquisition, linguistics.

Experience in language teaching and directing/coordinating a language program. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:  

  • Background in second language acquisition pedagogy 
  • Ability to make involved decisions about program direction and personnel 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work well within a team environment
