Coinbase is hiring a

Chief Risk Officer, Bermuda

Remote

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

We are looking for a senior risk manager with deep credit or market risk experience across centrally cleared derivatives and credit products (derivatives, secured lending, and/or prime brokerage), and with a strong understanding and interest in risk governance and the three lines of defense. This role will be responsible for both developing and overseeing the broader second line risk management governance program as the Chief Risk Officer of Coinbase Bermuda, and for risk-managing our growing derivatives offerings. The right candidate will enjoy operating in a dynamic, global digital asset market environment, managing complex credit risks across a diverse client base, and working with international stakeholders. This role will be based remotely in Bermuda.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate risk programs for Coinbase Bermuda in line with relevant regulatory guidelines and to ensure alignment with the Global Risk Framework.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Coinbase Bermuda management, business partners, regulators) to provide independent assurance on the key risks of the business, partnering with the business and other internal stakeholders to address any identified gaps.
  • Design and implement risk frameworks for new and existing leveraged product offerings, including developing suitable margin methodologies and risk controls.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the risk management framework associated with exchange and clearing house operations.
  • Actively engage in the product design process, in order to influence and mitigate inherent structural risks during the development phase.
  • Collaborate with business partners (product, engineering, operations, legal, etc.) to resolve complex client and product challenges.
  • Ability to perform deep dives on internal and external risk events and present them to senior management.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • 10+ years experience in risk management at a global financial institution or financial services firm.
  • Meaningful experience managing credit or market risk, i.e., establishing margin requirements for derivatives, prime brokerage or lending products.
  • Experience with building out risk programs at varying maturity levels.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter with commercial business insight. Able to interact, influence and build relationships at all levels of seniority and across all functions within an organization.
  • Able to balance strategic focus with tactical implementation and efficient execution.
  • Enjoy analyzing, evaluating and forming independent judgments, making recommendations that effectively communicate gaps, trends and patterns, and challenging the status quo for better outcomes.

Nice to haves:

  • Crypto forward - strong knowledge of emerging crypto trends.
