Carbon Clean is hiring a

Chemical Process Modelling Researcher

Houston, United States
Full-Time

The R&D team looks to drive innovation within Carbon Clean, solve problems, and identify and fill critical knowledge gaps. As a Chemical Reaction Engineer within the R&D organization, you will be responsible for building fit for purpose reactor/contactor models and thermodynamic models involved in Carbon Clean’s process technology, timely and high-quality analysis of process data, and providing recommendations to the technical team. You will be an integral part of the idea generation process and your work will be critical to driving process innovation and intellectual property generation for Carbon Clean. You will also proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders, consulting with thoughtful and well-communicated solutions custom-fit to their requirements.

Your Key Focus Areas Will be:

  • Building and owning the development of custom models for reaction processes and building blocks in Carbon Clean’s CO2 capture processes, validating models using field and bench-scale data, and continuously improving models to improve predictions.
  • Building and owning the development of thermodynamics (phase-equilibria) models, property models, degradation models, validating models using lab data, and continuously improving models to improve predictions.
  • Evaluating different modelling platforms and developing new approaches to improve accuracy of model predictions.
  • Supporting new idea generation, de-risking novel process concepts, and pilot/process-scale troubleshooting activities.
  • Proactively preparing simulation plans in support of project goals and performing post-processing and data analysis using your knowledge of reaction engineering and thermodynamics.
  • Preparing figures, reports, and presentations to document project results. Presenting these results regularly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • To develop and maintain expertise in the company’s core technologies through reading literature and attending conferences and webinars.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or related discipline with relevant thesis work.
  • Solid understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals – transport phenomena, chemical reaction engineering, reactive mass transfer, thermodynamics/phase equilibria, multiphase contactors, and separation processes.
  • Excited to contribute to revolutionary technology development in CO2 capture.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and work well with others in a dynamic team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Being self-motivated and self-reliant.
  • Demonstrated experience with
    • Developing and applying multi-scale models of process units including reactive mass transfer unit operations, rotating packed beds, packed columns, scrubbing vessels, etc.
    • Building, solving, and optimizing robust kinetic models which incorporate fundamental process chemistry.
    • Software packages: Aspen Plus, gPROMS, AVEVA process modeler or similar.
    • Programming languages: Python, MATLAB
    • Using off-the-shelf optimizers to fit models to experimental data (example: HEEDS, SciPy, Pyomo).

      Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience with writing custom rate-based process blocks using Aspen Custom Modeler or gPROMS in an industrial R&D setting.
    • Hands-on experience with lab or pilot scale experimentation, data analysis, and analytical techniques.
    • Solid understanding of dimensionless groups, and development of heat transfer and mass transfer correlations from experiments.
    • Demonstrated programming abilities in any of the following: C, Fortran, Python, Java and/or Excel VBA.
    • Demonstrated experience of presenting modelling analysis results to stakeholders.
