Internship

DataKind is looking for a Business Development Intern for Summer 2024!

About DataKind

DataKind is a global nonprofit dedicated to harnessing the power of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) in the service of humanity. DataKind matches skilled volunteers from academia and industry with visionary changemakers, collaboratively designing innovative solutions to tough social challenges.

People are at the center of our process: DataKind celebrates human-centered design principles that focus on the “why,” the “for whom,” and the “should we” long before we ever get going on the “what.” We’ll continue our work until all people and all communities can use digital technology for the outcomes they want to see, with an emphasis on including those who have historically been excluded from the technology sector or will be impacted by the intervention.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an intern who is eager to learn about DataKind and contribute to its mission to harness data science and AI in service of humanity! In this position, you will work closely with the Business Development Team. Business Development is responsible for fundraising to meet DataKind’s financial goals so that DataKind remains committed to engaging technology and social sector experts to apply data science and AI to solve challenging problems.

The Intern will support the team’s efforts to build and maintain strong systems and processes. You will support database management, prospect research, and administrative tasks. You will intake donations from a number of platforms and record it in Salesforce, conduct research to identify well-aligned corporations and foundations, and help build DataKind’s profile on various online platforms that support how the nonprofit is presented to donors, volunteers, and grantmakers. Along the way, the Intern will have a front-row seat to nonprofit fundraising and how institutional relationships are cultivated.

You will be working closely with DataKind’s Business Development team in the following areas. No previous experience in these areas is necessary - we’ll teach you any context or process you need to know!

  • Donation Tracking and Database Management - 25%: Track donations and grant payments made to DataKind through a number of donation platforms (i.e. PayPal, Benevity, YourCause, etc), ensure these are captured accurately in our Salesforce and other systems, and prepare donor acknowledgement correspondence.
  • Prospect and Partner Research - 25%: Conduct research and provide support in building up-to-date prospective funder lists, and prepare research notes for partner calls, to help with fundraising efforts..
  • Administrative and Systems Support- 25%:  Support on updating DataKind’s profile on various online platforms to ensure DataKind is presented clearly, consistently, and transparently to donors, volunteers, and grantmakers. You will attend meetings and perform other administrative tasks as needed. You will help make information easier to find in our Google Drive folders.
  • Grant Application Support - 25%: Contribute to funding applications through helping to project manage applications, attending funder webinars, drafting content for grant applications, and collating organizational materials as requested by prospective funders.

Why raise funds as a nonprofit powered by spectacular volunteers? Being a not-for-loss nonprofit, we fundraise to support the service of ensuring our volunteers’ and project partners’ experience is as smooth and fulfilling as possible--this includes finding volunteers with the right skillset, identifying passionate project partners and scoping out preliminary details for high-impact projects so it's primed for the volunteer.
