Biomedical Scientist/Service Operations Specialist

We have an opening for a Biomedical Scientist to provide technical expertise in laboratory support. You will work in a challenging R&D environment in support of the Laboratory's researchers, programs, and other scientific and administrative duties within the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division (BBTD).

In this role you will:

  • Perform routine laboratory support tasks such as sterilization of sitewide autoclave waste, washing and autoclaving glassware and liquid media, mission critical package pickup and delivery, and maintaining the BBTD storeroom.
  • Coordinate other support and operational tasks in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division such as backup support for the Animal Care Facility under general direction of the BBTD Deputy Division Leader.
  • Assess safety concerns and expedite and/or facilitate resolution.
  • Work in an organized team environment to provide superior customer service.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with researchers, facility staff, and other onsite support staff.
  • Maintain detailed records in accordance with requirements from Alameda County Department of Environmental Health and other regulators.
  • Maintain records in accordance with requirements from the IACUC, AALAC, OLAW, and CDC and maintain accurate records for research and development projects.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors to schedule maintenance and services.
  • Present informal overviews of work progress at weekly meetings.
  • May serve as a backup Laboratory Animal Caretaker. 
    • Perform a variety of routine laboratory animal husbandry procedures such as equipment, caging, or facility sanitation, animal husbandry, and preparing caging and maintenance for animal rooms.
    • Coordinate other operational tasks in Biosciences and Biotechnology Division under general direction of the Animal Care Facility Manager.
    • Assess safety concerns and expedite and/or facilitate resolution.
    • Participate in training for in vivo research studies as directed by Animal Care Facility Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • BS, BA, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Ability to use large equipment and trouble-shoot malfunctions, such as sanitation equipment (sterilization units).
  • Fundamental computer skills including knowledge of standard software and data analysis applications.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and teamwork skills and abilities.
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to manage scheduling conflicts and work off hours if needed.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Safety and Health concepts.

  • Some experience with or knowledge of facilities operations.

Security Clearance
