The Biomedical Engineering Manager assists the Department Director with all aspects of the program management, including work history, data analysis, staffing allocations, budget control, equipment acquisition planning, installation and testing, outside vendor management, development of policies and procedures, and provision of biomedical services.  This position ensures all program components support Joint Commission and various other state and local codes that relate to electrical and mechanical equipment safety.  This position performs rounds on clinical units to verify proper equipment use and operation as well as develops and monitors compliance with equipment preventative maintenance schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Possesses basic knowledge of multi-platform computer software and hardware used for operation and transmission of equipment related to patient care.
  • In conjunction with director, develops, implements, and ensures adherence to biomedical engineering practices and general departmental policies and procedures to improve the efficiency of repair services and operations.
  • Provides technical support for biomedical equipment throughout healthcare systems as assigned, including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, maintaining parts inventories, performing rounds in customer areas and participating in on-call rotation if necessary.
  • Documents all actions and test results according to department policy, using computerized maintenance management software applications and other standard office software applications.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in requests for special projects, such as new equipment acquisitions planning, and analysis of vendor proposals, installation planning, acceptance testing, renovations, equipment upgrades and equipment disposal.
  • Develops preventative maintenance schedules and guidelines; trains all technical staff on proper testing and other procedures to be followed when performing scheduled maintenance on devices maintained by the department.
  • Assists with assessments of department performance against quality standards, including performing quality audits as required.
  • Develops or reviews emergency and safety plans related to use and operation of critical patient care equipment.
  • Reviews patient care equipment safety alerts and recall notices and take appropriate actions to ensure the affected equipment is tested or removed from service, where appropriate.
  • Maintains professional growth through appropriate training, seminars, workshops, conferences, and related activities.
  • Responsible for annual performance reviews, hiring, disciplinary and corrective actions.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Required:

 

  • Associate degree in biomedical equipment technology and/or equivalent recent and relevant experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years progressive experience in the biomedical field in a hospital environment

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering or a related discipline
