Backend Platform Software Engineer - Core Services

Remote

About GameChanger:

We believe in the life-changing impact youth sports have on and off the field because they encourage leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and confidence—important life lessons that have the power to propel our youth toward meaningful futures. We recognize that without coaches, parents, and volunteers, organized youth sports could not exist. By building the first and best place to experience the youth sports moments important to our community, we are helping families elevate the next generation through youth sports.

So if you love sports and their community-building potential, or building cool products is your sport, GameChanger is the team for you. We are a remote-first, dynamic tech company based in New York City, and we are solving some of the biggest challenges in youth sports today.

The Position:

The Core Services Team at GameChanger is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the backend services and the developer experience of the product teams working with it. Our team works across the backend services for our entire application suite (these are mostly written in TypeScript, run in AWS and communicate with our Postgres and DocDB databases). Our team has 5 developers today, though we work very closely with the other platform teams and collaborate regularly with the product teams.

As a Backend Platform Software Engineer on our team, you’ll be responsible for the health of our API server codebase and proactively finding ways to improve it. You’ll own the frameworks and SDK that underpin GameChanger’s development. You will take an integral part in the changes to our server side codebase to make it more performant, productive, and scalable. You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager of Core Services.

What You’ll Do:

  • Identify and improve inefficiencies within our backend code base.
  • Participate in designing/redesigning integral parts of our system as our systems continue to scale and become more complex.
  • Introduce code patterns and tools to improve developer ergonomics.
  • Learn best practices and share those with other engineers across the company.
  • Collaborate with peers within and outside of our team on critical decisions about how our applications are architected and built.
  • Investigate interesting challenges in scaling, security and architectural designs.

Who You Are:

  • Have between 2-5 years experience in development, preferably with backend JavaScript development.
  • Dedication to delivering high quality, scalable solutions.
  • Passion and savvy working with the latest in web and server development tech.
  • Comfortable working in a multi-disciplined product team.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills.
  • Drive to help others learn and improve themselves as engineers.

Bonus Points:

  • Track record of successful projects utilizing Typescript and Node.js.
  • Experience working with Postgres/DocDB.
  • Experience with mentoring/training.

Perks:

  • Work remotely or from our well-furnished, modern office in NYC’s FiDi.
  • Unlimited vacation policy.
  • Technology stipend - $4,000 every 2 years to purchase new technology.
  • Full health benefits - medical, dental, vision, prescription, FSA/HRA, etc., as well as coverage for family/dependents.
  • Life insurance - basic life, supplemental life, and dependent life.
  • Disability leave - short-term disability and long-term disability.
  • Retirement savings - 401K plan offered through Vanguard, with a company match.
  • Generous parental leave.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • DICK’S Sporting Goods Teammate Discount.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

The target salary range for this position is between $105,000 and $170,000. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that includes incentive, equity, and benefits for eligible roles. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
