About the role 🎉

We're looking for an Engineering Manager (Backend) who will manage our current but growing Backend team of 5. You should have experience leading high-performing engineering teams and be deeply interested in the intersection of machine learning and systems design.

You’ll have a chance to work closely with our research and frontend teams to build low-latency, high-reliability APIs powering our machine learning based creation tools as well as the infrastructure to support them. This role is on a small team with a big impact.

What you’ll do 🎨

  • Lead a talented Backend engineering team and keep pushing the boundaries of content creation in the browser
  • Work weekly with leadership and the engineering team as a whole to review and set priority around goals
  • Build a team of skilled engineers from diverse backgrounds
  • Engage and retain engineers and make feelings of inclusion and psychological safety a top priority
  • Build server components for upcoming product features for Runway’s AI-based content creation and collaboration tools
  • Deploy services for processing and delivering multimedia content on the fly using state-of-the-art machine learning and graphics tech
  • Improve the performance, security, reliability, and code quality of our backend

What you’ll need 💻

  • 1+ year of experience in a team lead or engineering manager role
  • 4+ years of industry experience in a backend, distributed systems, or machine learning engineering role
  • Skills translating leadership goals into actionable tasks to be synthesized and distributed to your team
  • Empathetic and inclusive leadership style
  • Experience with cloud orchestration systems such as Kubernetes and cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure
  • Strong interest in writing robust and maintainable client-server architectures and APIs
  • Ability to rapidly prototype solutions and iterate on them with tight product deadlines
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills
  • Plus if you have (but not required) Familiarity with Python-based image and video manipulation/encoding/decoding frameworks, such as OpenCV and PyAV

There are many factors that go into salary determinations, including relevant experience, skill level and qualifications assessed during the interview process, and maintaining internal equity with peers on the team. The range shared below is a general expectation for the function as posted, but we are also open to considering candidates who may be more or less experienced than outlined in the job description. In this case, we will communicate any updates in the expected salary range.

Lastly, the provided range is the expected salary for candidates in the U.S. Outside of those regions, there may be a change in the range, which again, will be communicated to candidates.

Salary range: $185-$230K
