Purpose of job 

The BA (hons) Jewellery Design and Production programme seeks an Associate Lecturer in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Creative Digital Skills for jewellery and creative practitioners who will lead and support the development of curricula and teaching across the course that expands the course in relevant creative digital and technological directions.

As an associate lecturer you are responsible for curriculum development and planning, teaching, assessment, administration and on-going scholarship within the subject, the broader creative context and education. You will work collaboratively within a course team, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions supporting the course vision. You will make a significant contribution to the quality of learning and teaching, and the support students receive enabling them to complete their modules and overarching studies successfully.

You will also work with the Head of HE, Course Leader, BA Leader, students and other colleagues across the Academy in promoting and developing the subject through conferences, public exhibitions and other contributions to research and knowledge exchange. You will develop partnerships and collaborations with industry partners as well as bring your own practice to bear on the development of the subject and the course.

Key areas of responsibility

The post-holder will be expected to undertake:

  • Responsibility for undergraduate students’ pastoral support, progress and attendance, maintaining records and liaising with colleagues as appropriate.
  • Pedagogic and curriculum development that stimulate thought and practice that challenge the canon of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and digital technologies with the aim of promoting diversity and inclusivity.
  • Expand the capacity of the course design to meet the need to expand the curriculum into the digital arena.
  • This responsibility is of immediate strategic importance and may develop or change in the light of new priorities.
  • The post-holder is expected to uphold and implement the policies and procedures of The Academy.

Academic

  • To undertake teaching as appropriate to your areas of expertise and the subject areas of the Course or Academy 
  • To stay abreast of research and other developments in the subject, with a particular focus on digital technologies and to ensure that these developments are reflected in the curriculum in consultation with colleagues and within the structures and mechanisms established by the Academy 
  • To extend the level of subject expertise and critical understanding on the Course so as to keep the curriculum at the forefront and that this is relevant to a diverse and international range of students 
  • To conduct assessment, formative and summative, which is rigorous, fair and clear and complies with the policies established by the Academy, validating bodies and oversight organisations 
  • To provide both academic and pastoral support to students, monitoring progress and attendance, and maintaining appropriate records 

Quality and Enhancement

  • To contribute to strategic planning in relation to the course in areas such as student recruitment, the deployment of resources, research and knowledge exchange
  • To contribute to the monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning through continuous course monitoring and to contribute to quality, management and enhancement activities across the Academy 
  • To be a member of the Course Committee and or of other committees, including examination boards, as the Head of HE requires 

Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation

  • Ensure that the curriculum is relevant, current and consistent with the mission and the vision for the course 
  • Ensure that the delivery of the curriculum is organised and resourced appropriately to the academic award, and to the learning styles and developmental stages of the students 
  • Plan and manage assessment and ensure students are given constructive and timely feedback that helps them improve 

Student Support and Guidance

  •  Contribute to information provided to students by the Academy 

Student Progression and Achievement

  • In liaison with the Admissions and MIS Team, support the maintenance of student records to ensure they are current, accurate and constructive  
  • Support the recruitment and selection processes applicable to the course, ensuring the correct delivery of the Academy Admissions Policy 

Entrepreneurship and Enterprise

  • Promote a digital culture of innovation within the Course and amongst the student and staff community  
  • Operate in a collegiate manner in liaising with appropriate colleagues in order to contribute to the income generating and related sponsorship activities of the Academy in areas that are directly related to their Academic Programme and areas of specialism  

Professional

  • To initiate or engage in pedagogic inquiry and teaching development as required with the specific focus of improving student engagement, experience and progression 
  • To participate in the engagement of students in feedback processes, and in consultation with the course team and course leader, respond to the issues raised through this engagement 
  • In consultation with the BA Leader, to liaise with other staff to enhance and extend the educational and creative links between the Course and other courses across the Academy 
  • To undertake scholarly activity (including research, knowledge exchange or teaching) relevant to the subject 
  • To contribute to the devising and delivery of activities (including income generation) which will benefit students’ educational experience and graduate outcomes 
  • Familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector (Academic) 

General

  • To perform such duties consistent with your role as may from time to time be assigned to you anywhere within the Academy 
  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the role 
  • To work in accordance with the Academy’s Policies, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in your work

Person Specification

Specialist Knowledge

  • Relevant undergraduate and post-graduate degree in the subject or a closely related discipline
  • PG Cert or equivalent experience (desired)
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (desired)
  • A detailed knowledge and deep understanding of digital design through a range of CAD software 
  • A detailed knowledge and deep understanding of jewellery manufacturing through a range of Computer Aided Manufacturing tools 
  • Knowledge of subject-specific research in an academic and/or professional environment 
  • Knowledge of delivering teaching and learning within a specialist subject base 

Skills

  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing adapting the medium and the message for a diverse audience in an inclusive and accessible way 
  • Plans, prioritises and manages resources effectively to achieve objectives 
  • Collaborates and works effectively within team and across different professional groups 
  • Applies own research to develop learning and assessment practice (desired)
  • Familiar with debates and research relating to planet emergency, decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector (desired)

Experience

  • Experience of teaching & assessment in a higher education environment in a relevant field of practice 
  • Experience of working with emergent technologies applied critically in a professional and/or academic context 
  • Experience of working with diverse software, applying and investigating them in jewellery designs or related practice 
  • Curriculum development experience (desired)
  • Familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector (desired)
  • Evidence of using contacts within subject peer group to develop partnerships or collaboration 
  • Evidence of research, knowledge exchange and/ or professional practice that contributes to the advancement of the subject and is relevant to the goals of the Course and Academy (desired)
