Associate General Counsel, Product and Regulatory

The Role

We are looking for an Associate General Counsel to join our Legal & Compliance team as our lead product and regulatory attorney, as we navigate evolving laws and regulations in healthcare, payments, consumer marketing/advertising, consumer and data privacy, and AI.  This role is well suited for a proactive, hands-on, and experienced product and regulatory attorney who is excited to build legal support structure and compliant-by-design product and servicing offerings, and enjoys managing and building a team focused on the same goals. This will report into the General Counsel. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and communicate a vision and roadmap for legal product and regulatory support at Cedar, and develop proactive strategies for regulatory compliance and risk management
  • Deeply embed with cross-functional teams, including product, implementations, engineering, compliance and marketing, to build and maintain compliant-by-design products and services by advising on regulatory requirements in a customer-oriented manner
  • Anticipate regulatory obstacles and emerging issues throughout the product lifecycle and develop solutions with other members of the Legal & Compliance team and other business units
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and partner to business teams, including advising and partnering on the end-to-end lifecycle of products and services
  • Train teams on laws and regulations applicable to our business and best practices
  • Partner with Compliance to ensure comprehensive risk support, including assisting in incident investigation and response, and the managing litigation, disputes and regulatory inquiries
  • Engage and manage external counsel on a range of issues, pressure testing legal analyses and translating advice into clear and actionable guidance for our business teams
  • Provide advice to the senior management on the risk and benefits of corporate and product strategies; and assist in briefing and communicating complex and sensitive regulatory matters to management and the Board. 
  • Manage, guide, mentor, and develop a team of legal professionals
  • Work collaboratively across teams, fostering a positive and inclusive environment

Skills & Experience

  • JD Degree from an accredited law school and license in good standing to practice law in at least one state bar.
  • 10+ years relevant legal experience at a top law firm, government and/or in-house (a combination  is a plus), with experience managing other people. 
  • Previous experience in tech/start-up/emerging growth companies preferred. 
  • Experience in healthcare/healthtech and consumer products preferred. 
  • Familiarity with federal and state that can apply to healthcare and payments businesses, such as anti-kickback laws, HIPAA, TCPA, CAN-SPAM, FDCPA, UDAAP, PCI DSS, CCPA, CPRA, GDPR, and GLBA, and where applicable related state law requirements. You do not necessarily need to be a subject matter expert on all of these but must have a strong regulatory foundation and be comfortable with a high-regulated operating environment where multiple regulatory regimes apply.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) skills, with the ability to influence and persuade, effectively interfacing at all levels of an organization 
  • A caring and motivational manager, capable of attracting, developing and advancing great talent and leading a distributed team, drawing on strengths to achieve common goals
  • Substantial experience working collaboratively and effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Candidates must be located in the U.S. 

Compensation Range and Benefits

  • Salary Range*: $255,000 - $300,000
  • This role is equity
