THE ROLE

This person will primarily work on cataloguing and coordinating various and single owners’ sales in the Silver and Ceramics and Chinese Export departments in New York. The Individual will participate in all aspects of auction preparation and handle property on a regular basis. The individual will be responsible for providing catalogue and research support on sales and longer term projects, working closely with Sotheby’s specialists and business departments, and liaising with clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This role encompasses the following responsibilities:

  • Cataloguing for Sales
    • Research and catalogue objects to the highest standard
    • Assist and coordinate research, both internally and with external experts
    • Liaise with conservators and restorers
    • Prepare catalogue notes and condition reports and assist with catalogue production as needed
  • Responsible for aspects of digital catalogue and catalogue preparation such as:
    • Liaise with Marketing, Catalogue Production and other support departments
    • Ensure that photography of objects is completed in a timely manner
    • Color-proof images for catalogue and web
    • Proof-read catalogue text
    • Serve as point of contact for marketing promises and sale marketing development for the various owner sales
  • Liaise with internal support staff including sale director, coordinator, registrars, art handlers, design and marketing with the planning and execution of all logistical aspects of the exhibition and sale
  • Assist with the production with Proposals
  • Working with the heads of department and specialists, learn to evaluate works for auction and appraisal purposes, develop expert knowledge
    • Respond to client estimate requests via phone and written response
    • Attend appraisal visits with colleagues to photograph and catalogue works for sale and insurance valuation purposes
    • Attend lectures and pursue higher level of knowledge of furniture and decorative arts
  • Provide a comprehensive level of service to Sotheby’s clients
    • Respond to day to day client queries and maintain client contact
    • Help to sell the sale by assisting clients at the exhibition; speak to clients about the property; assist with client outreach; develop, track and communicate client interest in lots; and execute bids at sale
  • Support members of the department in day-to-day projects, sale preparation and client management
  • Assist with general department support, including answering email enquiries, answering phones and assisting walk-ins

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • Educational background in Art History or a related discipline; demonstrated interest in Silver and Ceramics, and European Furniture with up to 5 years related experience
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize multiple highly important processes and responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to establish close working relationships with internal support staff including administrators, operations, catalogue production, etc.
  • Excellent client service, including verbal and written skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Requires flexibility in work hours as needed

The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $50,000-$55,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
