The Role
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Schmidt Sciences AI and Advanced Computing Institute (“Institute”), the Associate will join the Institute team to support the technical AI safety grantmaking program and exploration of new AI grantmaking programs.
 
Key Responsibilities
This role would be responsible for providing support on the following program and topics. The specific work would be developed jointly by the Associate and her manager and may change from time to time.

Program Support Responsibilities

  • SAFE-AI: Supporting the strategy and execution of the SAFE-AI program, including helping making the SAFE-AI program more international in its scope.
  • AI at Work: Supporting the strategy and execution of the AI at Work program.
  • Exploring New Opportunities: Identifying and evaluating new areas of involvement in AI.

Program And Gift/Grant/Investment Development Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and maintain communication with awardee PIs and research teams to track progress and challenges faced over the duration of the award.
  • Periodically assess if additional or different kinds of support could be necessary or beneficial.
  • Participate in the internal assessment process, including the analysis of incoming scientific proposals and reports in context of the current landscape.
  • Assess the effectiveness and impact of current AI Institute programs, grants, and gifts, utilizing metrics and analysis to measure success and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Contribute to optimization of budgets and financial resources associated with AI programs, monitoring expenditures and forecasting future needs to ensure efficient use of resources.

Strategic Program Development And Collaboration Responsibilities

  • Work with team members to develop new programs that might support technology, talent, or specific future pathways for the field
  • Design and organize effective convenings around strategic program goals, including community building and accelerating science outcomes
  • Act as a conduit for bringing in innovative ideas and perspectives from the AI community, actively engaging with stakeholders to identify emerging trends and opportunities for collaboration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Applicants must:
  • 1) Have a bachelor’s or master’s in computer science or related field 
    2) Have a track record of research in the domain of AI safety or related domains 
    3) Have experience producing technical writing for expert and general audiences
    4) Have demonstrated ability to collaborate and a record of impact in high-intensity, team-based environments
    5) Have the highest integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality
