Purpose of the Role:

Alongside an apprenticeship qualification, develop as an Electrical Technician to provide full life-cycle design technical support and maintenance for all aspects of the high complexity, low volume bespoke electronic systems used for the Formula 1 racing programme both on the car and as part of the operationally critical garage infrastructure.


  • This role will close for applications on Friday 18th October. The assessment day will be held at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking on Thursday 31st October 2024.


Role Dimensions:

As an apprentice within McLaren F1, you have a fantastic entry route into motorsports, you will be trained in all aspects involved with the manufacture and maintenance of the on and off car electrical and electronic systems. You’ll work at a high-performance organisation, getting hands-on experience, formal training and have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff.


  • The successful candidate(s) will be based full time at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) facility with remote learning to underpin the knowledge of Electronic Systems fundamentals.
  • An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Training in the basics of electronic systems will be covered in the first 24 months. This will include, but not limited to; small harness manufacturer, Raychem System 25, Sensor wiring and programming, soldering of components, fault finding.
  • Quickly integrate into the team, embracing our values and behaviours
  • Maintain strong and professional communications with key colleagues in the electronics systems to ensure your work delivered is as required and fit for purpose.
  • Maintain a logbook and ensure all academic work is up to date for monthly reviews
  • Where appropriate, assisting in preparation for the peak winter period, e.g. new test equipment preparation.
  • Become highly proficient in interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and electronic design documents.
  • Learn to work with harness systems containing many wires/contacts and mixed construction requirements.
  • Escalate technical and design issues as well as reliability and quality concerns to manager.
  • Supporting colleagues to monitor third party supplier quality levels through specialised electrical and electronic inspection and component testing and escalating quality and supplier concerns where appropriate.
  • Maintaining a safe environment and working to all HSE and COSHH constraints for materials and equipment and supporting colleagues to do the same.
