CERN is hiring an

Applied Physicist for Beam-beam and DA optimisation (BE-ABP-INC-2024-175-GRAP)

Geneva, Switzerland
Full-Time

Your responsibilities

In this position you will work within the Accelerators and Beam Physics Group (ABP) in the Beams Department (BE), specifically within the Incoherent Effects Section (INC), which is responsible for theoretical, numerical and experimental studies and proposals for the mitigation of interleaved incoherent multi-particle effects (e.g. space charge, beam-beam, intra-beam scattering, e-cloud, cooling) affecting the performance of present and future circular accelerators.

This position is focused on optimising the dynamic aperture (DA) and beam-beam collisions of the HL-LHC. This is to be achieved through studying and improving magnet field quality (FQ) and sorting activities.

The selected candidate will work on the following topics:

  • Study of sorting scenarios for the new HL LHC magnets with particular emphasis on prioritization of the sorting criteria (transfer function errors and field quality).
  • Follow up of the quality of magnets (transfer function and field quality) in view of defining their slot allocation and assess of their impact on the machine dynamic aperture.
  • Use the outcome from the sorting scenarios and slot allocation to study HL LHC operational scenarios in terms of dynamic aperture. The studies should naturally focus to the flattop luminosity production hence including beam-beam effects (e.g. luminosity levelling strategy, filling schemes and crab cavities configuration) together with the overall machine settings (tunes, chromaticity and octupoles).
  • Analyse the impact of the aforementioned parameters (e.g., measured field quality, sorting scenarios, beam-beam effect, octupoles...) on the beam halo formation.

Your profile

Skills

  • Knowledge in optics design
  • Numerical tools (python)
  • Non-linear beam dynamics and incoherent effects for synchrotron rings and colliders
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Applied physicist (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Job closing date: 06 January 2025 at 23:59 (midnight) CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Field of work: Applied Physics

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
