The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is seeking undergraduate interns for the 2023 summer season. The American Civil Liberties Union is the largest and oldest organization in the US dedicated to protecting the civil liberties of all people in this nation through litigation, public education, advocacy, and organizing. The ACLU’s work addresses a wide range of constitutional and civil rights issues, including criminal law reform, immigrants’ rights, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech, religious freedom, reproductive freedom, voting rights, police misconduct, prisoners’ rights, and privacy.
We are seeking students from a wide range of disciplines, including public policy, communications, political science, computer science, social work, and law. In addition to a vibrant and innovative caseload, the ACLU of Michigan offers interns a rewarding summer experience, including opportunities to attend court hearings, social activities, supervision, and mentorship.
Specific projects this year include work related to our democracy project, general legal intake, legal issue research, legislative research, and drafting communications assets.
Stipend: We encourage all applicants to seek internship funds through their educational institution. If you are unable to secure funding from your school for a public interest internship, the ACLU can provide funding to make this opportunity more feasible for students who would otherwise be required to seek paid employment over the summer. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in ACLU funding.
Location: This internship is hybrid, requiring some in-person attendance in Detroit.
To apply, submit your resume and a cover letter (by email or regular mail) to:

Please include in the email subject line: Last name, first name and “Summer 2023 Undergrad Internship Application”
