The Role:
The Accountant, Payroll and General Ledger Ops will be part of a team of technical and skilled accounting and finance professionals within the Controller organization who own General Ledger operations for CommerceIQ. We work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, collaborating within the Finance team and cross-functional partners.
As an Accountant, Payroll and General Ledger Ops at CommerceIQ, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of payroll accounting. This includes processing payroll, reconciling payroll-related accounts, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations. This position will also be responsible for cash workstreams, and at times, other ad hoc tasks to support the General Ledger operations team. The ideal candidate will have strong payroll processing skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
What You’ll Do:
Payroll
- Accurately process multi-state payroll (Paylocity) for all US-based employees, including validation of calculated wages, deductions, and taxes.
- Partner with HR to timely process payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
- Perform regular reconciliations of payroll-related accounts, including payroll liability accounts, payroll taxes, and resolve any discrepancies promptly.
- Partner and confirming with payroll provider to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax withholding requirements, wage and hour laws, and reporting obligations.
- Manage employee payroll inquiries and provide exceptional customer service to resolve issues and address concerns.
- Ensure compliance and timely adherence to year-end payroll processes, including reviewing and distribution of W-2s and 1095s.
- Prepare payroll journal entries to the general ledger. Ensure all payroll transactions are accurately recorded and properly classified.
- Maintain confidentiality over sensitive information such as personally identifiable information (“PII”), among others.
- Assist with internal and external audits related to payroll by providing necessary documentation and explanations as required.
- Identify opportunities to enhance payroll and accounting processes. Implement best practices to improve efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
- Stay updated on changes in payroll laws and regulations. Ensure all payroll and accounting activities adhere to legal and regulatory requirements.
- Develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as needed.
- Maintain proper documentation for internal controls.
Non-Payroll
- Reconcile cash daily, report on weekly cash positions, perform monthly bank reconciliations, and produce monthly cash-burn reports.

What You'll Bring:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in payroll processing and accounting at a high-growth pre-IPO startup.
- Strong understanding of, or interest in learning, payroll laws, tax regulations, and accounting principles.
- Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., Paylocity), accounting software (e.g., NetSuite), and Google/Microsoft business software (Gmail, Excel/GSheets, etc.).
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with employees and stakeholders.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and maintain a high level of professionalism.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Eagerness to learn and willingness to take on new challenges.
- Bias towards challenging the status quo and leveraging technology to build scalable processes, gain efficiencies, streamline accounting operations and improve outcomes.
- High level of honesty, integrity, commitment, and responsibility to day-to-day work.
- Undergraduate degree required, with a major in accounting or a related field of study preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:
The typical base pay range for this role across the US is USD: $78,000 - $116,000/per year
This base pay range may be inclusive of several career levels at CommerceIQ and will be narrowed based on a number of factors including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.
Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at CommerceIQ.
