Who are we looking for?

We are looking to hire a team of summer interns with varied skills and diverse backgrounds. Each summer intern will contribute to every stage of the project and collaborate on a solution that meets the needs of our community partner and the communities they serve.

A successful candidate will be empathetic to the needs of others, curious about the world, creative in their approach to problem-solving, and eager to learn by doing. We hire interns from all backgrounds and experiences, but will be especially interested to hear about your experience in any of the following:

  • Conducting research
  • Synthesizing and analyzing large quantities of information
  • Presenting a compelling point of view, in writing, in visuals, or as an oral presentation
  • Facilitating large groups of people in a context like a workshop or a seminar
  • Design of any kind — industrial, graphic, UX, etc.
  • Making something new and putting it out into the world

What types of roles are available?

We typically have two types of roles for our summer internship: designers and researchers. The Designership application is a general submission and as you progress through the interview process we will work with you to identify which role fits your goals best.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate on a team focused on creating more human-centred experiences
  • Participate in collaborative work sessions with clients
  • Explore trends and best practices and summarize the potential applications
  • Synthesize data from research and workshops to identify key insights
  • Participate in the translation of research insights into opportunities
  • Support the implementation of new experiences within client organizations
  • Communicate insights, opportunities, and concept designs to different audiences
  • Interact directly with end-users, community partner(s), and other stakeholders

Requirements

Profile of an ideal candidate:

You have:

  • A track record of participating in activities that demonstrate your curiosity about the world
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to consistently prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate tact and diplomacy
  • An affinity for human-centred design and design thinking
  • Availability for full-time work from the first week of May until the last week of August. Because you will be working as a team on a project for a community partner, we cannot accommodate different start or end dates

You are:

  • Compassionate with others, and can see the world from someone else’s point of view
  • A strong systems thinker and creative problem solver
  • Flexible and adaptable, allowing you to be comfortable in environments with a high degree of ambiguity
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, organized, and efficient, with a strong ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Very comfortable using technology to collaborate and adept at learning new software (where projects may require it)

You love:

  • Telling compelling stories, whether through narrative prose, compelling visuals, or effective prototypes
  • Refining the details of a solution until it meets a high standard for excellence
  • To improve people’s lives through a human-centred approach
  • To work collaboratively to turn ideas into reality, working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • To embrace new experiences with resiliency and a sense of adventure
  • Working in an entrepreneurial environment where creative boundaries are broad and natural curiosities are valued
  • Introducing new and innovative approaches to your work
  • The balance between working independently and in collaboration with creative teams

Benefits

Participants will work full-time for a minimum of 16 weeks at our Toronto office, beginning on May 5, 2025, and ending on August 22, 2025. Applicants must be available for full-time work for the entire period, but we are usually able to accommodate up to a few days off during the summer.

Past participants have told us that it is very difficult to balance Designership responsibilities with ongoing coursework or other significant commitments. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. All positions are paid, we consider an hourly rate of $28-30/hr commensurate with experience.
